π Overview
From July 12β29, 1952, large-scale UFO radar encounters occurred over Washington, D.C., with both Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB simultaneously detecting unidentified objects on weekends of July 19β20 and 26β27. Reported directly to President Truman, the incident triggered CIA concern and led to the establishment of the Robertson Panel in 1953.
π The Encounters
July 19β20: 7 unidentified tracks at 23:40, 15 miles SSW of city center. Speeds 100β130 mph β sudden acceleration to estimated 7,000 mph. Both Washington National and Andrews AFB radars detected simultaneously. Capital Airlines pilot S.C. Pierman visually observed 6 fast lights. F-94 Starfire interceptors scrambled, objects briefly disappeared then reappeared.
July 26β27: Same pattern, more tracks (12 estimated).
π Official Response
July 29, 1952 press conference β largest USAF UFO press conference in history:
- Led by Major General John Samford (USAF Director of Intelligence)
- Official conclusion: "temperature inversion" radar artifacts + misidentified stars/meteors
- "No solid material objects"
CIA concerns: Mass panic potential + Soviet psychological warfare possibility. September 1952 CIA Office of Scientific Intelligence began analysis. January 1953 Robertson Panel established.
π€ Unresolved Questions
Weaknesses of official explanation:
- Temperature inversion cannot produce 7,000 mph acceleration
- Radar operators and some USAF officers immediately disputed: "solid objects"
- Pilot visual + radar correlation hard to dismiss as simple signal error
πΊ Significance
- Starting point of modern UFO policy β Robertson Panel, expanded Project Blue Book
- CIA UFO interest began (model for later 2017+ revival)
- "Temperature inversion" became template explanation for decades
- 1990s CIA declassified documents revived analysis

πΊ Modern Reassessment
The 1952 Washington D.C. incident is now widely recognized as the founding moment of modern U.S. UFO policy:
- The "temperature inversion" official explanation has been the U.S. government template for UFO denials for 70+ years
- Robertson Panel (1953) β Project Blue Book (1952-1969) β AARO (2022) chain of U.S. UFO investigation bodies
- 1990s CIA document declassifications revealed CIA's deep involvement in 1952 era UFO policy
Modern UAP researchers cite this as the first instance of the U.S. government's reactive UFO management β establishing the pattern of public denial + private concern that continued until 2017 NYT exposΓ©.
