📅 Overview
On December 21 and December 30–31, 1978, near Kaikōura mountain range on New Zealand's South Island, UFO incidents occurred. Made famous by TV crew's 16mm color film footage — a Melbourne TV crew directly filmed the objects during a night flight, with the footage broadcast on international news.
🔍 Event Sequence
Dec 21 (1st): Cargo pilots observed unidentified lights. Wellington Airport radar tracked simultaneously. Light accompanied aircraft for ~15 minutes.
Dec 30–31 (2nd) — TV broadcast: Melbourne Channel 0 (now Network 10) TV crew flew to recreate the event. Wellington → Christchurch night flight. 16mm color film + sound recording simultaneously. "Huge white-red light" accompanied the aircraft for ~15 minutes. David Crockett (cameraman) captured additional footage. Wellington Airport radar simultaneously tracked.
🛂 NZ Government Position
RNZAF investigation conclusion: Squid boat lights reflected off clouds. Multiple fishing boats actually operating same time same waters.
Physicist Bruce Maccabee rebuttal: US optical physicist Maccabee analyzed footage. "Luminosity/speed/pattern not explainable by squid boat lights". 15-minute aircraft accompaniment impossible by simple reflection.
🤔 Analysis
Squid boat hypothesis strengths: December 1978 = NZ squid fishing season peak. Kaikōura waters are squid fishing hub. Powerful fishing lights (pre-LED, strong white lights) reflecting on clouds appear as large luminous bodies.
Weaknesses: 15-minute aircraft accompaniment hard to explain by reflection (stationary reflection vs moving aircraft). Wellington Airport radar capture — fishing boats themselves not detected on radar. Luminosity change patterns in footage.
📺 Significance
- New Zealand's largest UFO incident
- TV broadcast 16mm film — one of best-preserved UFO video records
- 1979 broadcast on BBC, ABC News, CBS News → international attention
- NZ government RNZAF report declassified 1990s
- Maccabee's analysis remains canonical UFO research material
🇳🇿 16mm Film Standard
The Kaikoura 1978 film is the gold standard of UFO video documentation:
- 16mm color film + synchronized sound recording (pre-digital)
- Captured by professional Channel 0 TV crew
- 23 minutes total footage
- Confirmed by Wellington airport radar tracking
Bruce Maccabee's 1979 analysis remains the most authoritative scientific examination of the footage. The squid fishing fleet explanation by RNZAF has not been universally accepted in the UFO research community. Modern digital recreations of the supposed squid-light-cloud-reflection hypothesis have failed to replicate the observed phenomena.
