📅 Overview
From December 26–28, 1980, USAF security personnel at RAF Woodbridge (US-operated) reported unidentified luminous objects in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England. With three nights of multiple encounters and an official memo by Deputy Base Commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt, it became Britain's best-documented UFO case, earning the nickname "Britain's Roswell."
🔍 Three Nights of Encounters
December 26 (Night 1):
- ~03:00, security at RAF Woodbridge East Gate sighted luminous object
- 3 security personnel entered the forest → reported metallic appearance with colored lights
- Next day "landing marks" (pressed grass, tree damage) discovered
December 27 (Night 2):
- Additional sightings reported
December 28 (Night 3) — Halt incident:
- Deputy Base Commander Lt. Col. Charles I. Halt personally led on-site investigation
- Recorded 18 minutes on microcassette (Halt tape) with 5 servicemen
- Recording captures multiple luminous objects, rapid motion, proximity to RAF Lakenheath
- Official Halt Memo filed January 13, 1981
🛂 UK MoD + USAF Position
UK Ministry of Defence:
- 1980s: archival storage + no response
- 1990s+ some files declassified
- 2010 UK MoD UFO Desk closed
USAF:
- No official investigation
- Halt Memo itself is the most authoritative US military fact record
🤔 Skeptic Composite Explanation
Three-factor composite hypothesis:
- Meteor/fireball: multiple fireballs reported same time
- Orfordness Lighthouse: rotating beacon 5 miles away
- Bright stars (Sirius etc.): flickering through trees
UFO rebuttal: Lighthouse stationary for 5+ years — unlikely sudden recognition. Landing marks. Detected radiation (low).
📺 Significance
- UK's largest UFO incident
- Active-duty US deputy base commander's official memo — military credibility
- BBC and many documentaries
- 2021: Halt publicly stated dissatisfaction with official explanations
📜 Halt Memo's Lasting Significance
The Halt Memo (1981-01-13) is the most authoritative U.S. military UFO document declassified before the 2017 NYT exposé:
- 1-page memo by USAF Lt. Col. Charles Halt
- Declassified via UK FOIA in 1983
- Halt's 18-minute audio tape supporting evidence
- Cited in UK Parliament UAP debates (2000s)
Combined with 1976 Cheongwadae (Korea) and 2004 Tic-Tac (US Navy), Rendlesham completes the "trinity of government-facility UFO incidents". UK MoD closure of UFO Desk (2010) effectively ended UK official UAP investigation.
